Photo Friday: Hero Edition
November 14, 2008I was going to post about the trip, but it’s going to take me a long time to write. Instead, I’ll post a couple of photos and then a full report will follow early tomorrow morning. I wanted to write today, but I’m still processing a lot of what I saw. For instance I forgot until yesterday afternoon that one vet was 91 years old and his trip to DC was his first flight ever.
So for now, a couple of photos.
We were at Hartsfield when Deanna and her mother stopped by just to meet the veterans and thank them for their service. Deanna is in her second bout with cancer and was on her way from North Carolina to Indiana for a special treatment. She was up early and yet was better dressed than all of us. When I mentioned this, her mom started to repeat it to Deanna, but she piped up and said, “Mom, the cancer didn’t steal my hearing!”
Deanna and the veterans talked about differnet types of battles, and it was hard to tell who was more honored to meet the other one. Here’s to wishing her a fast recovery.
When we landed in DC, there were about 100 people cheering, clapping, waving American flags and shouting. They were there to welcome and support the veterans.
I’ll have loads more photos tomorrow and a full report. I’ll write again soon about running. But for now…this feels more important.

Best of luck to Deanna & speedy recovery.
Your second pic’s making me cry.
I’m glad you were there to tell us about this…we need to see things like this.
That 91 year old vet sounds like the grandfather. His first plane ride was about 4 years ago and he is 88 years old.
Incredible photos. I agree with Joy about the second photo. Thanks for sharing them.
